Sustainability & Community Impact
Our Guiding Principle: “Warisan Laut, Masa Depan Kita”
This Indonesian phrase, meaning “Our Maritime Heritage, Our Future,” is the cornerstone of our sustainability philosophy. We believe that operating within the pristine environment of the Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a profound privilege that comes with an even more profound responsibility. Our commitment extends beyond mere compliance; it is an active and passionate dedication to protecting the region’s unparalleled biodiversity and uplifting the local communities who are its traditional stewards. Every voyage with us is a partnership in preservation.
Environmental Commitments: Protecting a Global Treasure
Our policies are designed to minimize our footprint and actively contribute to the health of the marine ecosystem.
- Marine Conservation Partnerships: We are proud financial and logistical partners of the Komodo Survival Program. A percentage of every charter fee is directly donated to their critical work in monitoring and protecting the Komodo dragon population. We also collaborate with local NGOs on coral reef health surveys and manta ray population tracking.
- Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy: All our chartered vessels are 100% free of single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags. Guests are provided with personal, reusable stainless-steel water bottles and tote bags upon arrival. All water onboard is produced through high-capacity desalination systems.
- Comprehensive Waste Management: We enforce a strict zero-waste-to-sea policy. All waste generated onboard—organic and inorganic—is meticulously sorted, stored, and transported back to Labuan Bajo for proper disposal and recycling through our partnership with a local waste management facility.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We acknowledge the carbon footprint of travel. We partner with the Indonesian foundation Jejak.in to calculate the emissions from each charter’s fuel consumption. We then offset 100% of these emissions by investing in verified mangrove reforestation projects in coastal areas of Flores, which also provide vital ecosystem benefits and community employment.
- Responsible On-Water Practices: Our captains are trained to use designated mooring buoys provided by the Komodo National Park Authority to prevent anchor damage to coral reefs. We provide all guests with complimentary, high-quality reef-safe sunscreen to prevent coral bleaching.
Community Commitments: Empowering Local Stewards
We believe that sustainable tourism must provide tangible, long-term benefits to the local population.
- Local Employment & Fair Wages: We mandate that our partner vessels maintain a crew composition of at least 80% Indonesian nationals, with a strong preference for hiring from local communities in Labuan Bajo and the surrounding Manggarai region. All crew are paid fair wages, receive health insurance (BPJS), and are provided with opportunities for professional development.
- Sourcing from Local Enterprises: We prioritize sourcing all fresh produce, seafood, and other provisions from local markets and suppliers in Labuan Bajo. This direct economic injection supports local farmers, fishermen, and small business owners.
- Preserving Cultural Heritage: We foster deep, respectful relationships with the communities of South Sulawesi who build these magnificent vessels. We ensure that the Panrita Lopi (master builders) are fairly compensated for their unparalleled craftsmanship. During our voyages, we facilitate respectful cultural exchanges, such as visits to Papagarang village, ensuring that the community directly benefits financially from tourism.
- Community Development Fund: Through our parent company, Juara Holding Group, we contribute to a community development fund focused on two key areas in the Labuan Bajo area: providing educational scholarships for children and funding local waste management infrastructure projects.
